A variety preserved by the Brown family of West Virginia, which they recall from the 1930s. The fruit is deep pink, large—up to half a kilogram—and covered with a delicate skin. The flesh is virtually seedless and very aromatic. The fruit’s shape ranges from round to heart-shaped and is irregular. The fruit reaches maturity about 90 days after planting. The plant grows tall and requires staking or tying up.
The name honors Mamie Brown. Her granddaughter, Alicia Brown-Matthes, received seeds from her aunt Louise and donated them to the Seed Savers Exchange in 1995. The family history and a photograph of the old farm were published in the 2013 SSE conservation collection catalog.
