A determinate variety that bears fruit very early and stops growing at a height of about 50 cm. At first glance, this variety may seem similar to
Polar Baby, but upon closer inspection of the characteristics of both varieties, the differences are clearly visible:
Polar Star bears fruit with similar abundance, but the fruits are nearly 50% larger (weighing an average of 90–120 grams). The trade-off for the fruit’s size is a growing season that is 5 days longer for the
Polar Star variety. This variety originates from Alaska, so it’s no surprise that it tolerates cold climates exceptionally well. Thanks to its short growing season, it’s perfectly suited for field cultivation.
The variety is the work of John Holm of Fairbanks, Alaska. The breeder worked on tomatoes capable of ripening during the region’s short growing season. Seeds of his varieties, including “Polar Star,” were added to the conservation collection at the Georgeson Botanical Garden at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
