Manitoba is one of the earliest tomato varieties. If you’re looking for a variety to kick off the season, we encourage you to consider this one. This determinate plant bears fruit about 58 days after planting. The variety was developed at the Morden Experimental Farm in the Canadian province of Manitoba, and released in 1956. The fruits are round, slightly flattened, uniform in size within the plant, have an intense red color, and weigh no more than 90 grams. This variety is perfect for small gardens where space is at a premium—the bush is low and spreading; be sure to leave room for its lateral shoots.
It was developed in a region where a short growing season necessitates an early harvest. The Canadian publication Research for Farmers from the winter of 1958 highlighted Manitoba as a significant achievement in the development of tomatoes that ripen before the autumn cool-down.
