German Johnson is a beefsteak tomato variety with large fruits and a very high yield. The fruits often weigh 500 grams, and many of them can even exceed 1 kilogram! The fruits have an excellent flavor, are fleshy, and have a very thin skin that is resistant to damage. The plants grow very vigorously and require staking or tying up; otherwise, they may be damaged. A late-season variety; the fruits ripen about 90 days after transplanting in the ground. German Johnson has a long tradition of cultivation in Virginia and North Carolina. Southern Exposure Seed Exchange lists it as one of the varieties used to create “Mortgage Lifter.” It also serves as a good benchmark when comparing large, pink-red sandwich tomatoes.
