Bright pink fruits weighing from 450 to even over a kilogram. The fruits are a deep pinkish-red color, have thin skin, and are very fleshy, with almost no seeds. In terms of flavor, they combine a distinct sweetness with a fruity note. The skin is resistant to cracking and damage. The high yield and durability of the fruit suggest commercial applications for this variety. The tomatoes reach maturity about 80 days after transplanting.
The variety was preserved by Bill Ellis, who obtained it from a greenhouse in DuBois, Pennsylvania. In the 1989 Seed Savers Exchange yearbook, it was listed as “Dr. Neal’s”; later, the shortened name “Dr. Neal” became widely used. This is one of those tomatoes whose survival we owe to seed exchange among collectors.
