An excellent, very old tomato variety that, according to accounts, was discovered by James Lyde Williamson of Friendly, West Virginia, in a deposit left by the Ohio River during the flood of 1884. Gary Ibsen’s favorite variety, which is on his list of the most important varieties to plant every year. The plants are vigorous, with regular leaves. The giant fruits, full of classic tomato flavors, weigh between 450 and 900 grams and ripen about 80 days after planting. We recommend this variety for every garden!

The story of how the plant was discovered after a flood is a traditional tale associated with this variety. For a comparison of the colors of large fruits, you may also want to check out 1884 Purple.
