Ispolin comes from a Russian growing tradition, and its name means “giant.” In our garden, this tall, sturdy plant produces large quantities of dark pink, very fleshy fruits, some of which weigh more than a kilogram.
We appreciate its intense tomato flavor with an earthy note. It’s one of our favorite varieties, partly because of its harvest time: we get the first fruits about 73 days after planting the seedlings. Large slices work well on sandwiches.
Seed collections that trace its Siberian origins preserve this variety. However, its cool region of origin does not mean it can do without a warm growing location: for the large fruits to ripen properly, it’s important to provide plenty of sun and sturdy support.
