Lilac Giant does not ripen to a lilac color, despite its name. Ripe fruits have a pink, raspberry-like hue; they are large, slightly flattened, and fleshy. The fruits weigh 400–700 g. Its juicy flesh and balanced flavor make it a good choice for sandwiches, salads, and thick slices for summer meals.
The variety has a documented history in seed exchange: Tatiana’s TOMATObase notes its listing in the 2002 Seed Savers Exchange catalog. It has also been added to the Heritage Seed Library collection of Garden Organic.
This tall plant requires support and space to spread out. It’s a good idea to support the heavy clusters to prevent them from breaking. For a comparison of similar pink slicing tomatoes, check out Russian Rose.
