Neves Azorean Red is a large red tomato with a dense, fleshy interior and a full flavor. These beefsteak-type fruits, usually slightly flattened, weigh 400–900 g in our description. They make great thick slices for sandwiches and burgers, but are also perfect for salads where the tomato takes center stage.
According to seed collectors’ records, the variety is associated with Anthony Neves, who brought tomatoes from the Azores to Massachusetts and selected plants with large fruits. Its name preserves both the gardener’s surname and the memory of the islands from which the seed stock originated.
The plant is tall and requires sturdy support. Due to the size of the fruit, it’s also a good idea to support the heavy clusters and maintain even soil moisture. For a comparison of red tomatoes suitable for thick slices, “Beefsteak” is a good match.
