Black Plum is a dark plum tomato with a mahogany-red skin and often greenish shoulders. The fruits are about 4.5 cm long and 3 cm wide. Their firm flesh and distinctive, sweet-and-tart flavor make them suitable for salads as well as for baking, drying, or making sauce.
The variety’s path into international collections is linked to Marina Danilenko of Moscow, who donated the seeds to Seed Savers. The Diggers Club describes its own trial plantings and the variety’s subsequent preservation in the collection. This is a tomato with practical uses and a significant place in the history of seed exchange.
The plants grow tall and require staking. The elongated fruits, harvested in successive clusters, allow the harvest to be used gradually in the kitchen. The yellow “Banana Legs” fits well into a two-color collection of tomatoes suitable for drying.
