The Life Cycle of a Tomato
The tomato growth cycle encompasses all stages of the plant’s life—from nasiona until the end of fruiting. Understanding these stages facilitates proper fertilization, watering, and care.
1\. Germination
The cycle begins when the seed absorbs water and initiates its life processes. At the optimal temperature (approximately 24–28°C), the first seedlings usually emerge after 5–8 days.
2\. Seedling Production
After the cotyledons and first true leaves develop, the young plant intensively builds its root system and above-ground parts. At this stage, adequate light, moderate watering, and the right temperature are particularly important.
3\. Vegetative Growth
After being transplanted to its permanent location, the tomato plant focuses on developing its roots, stems, and leaves. Future yield potential is established during this phase, so the plant requires good light conditions and balanced fertilization.
4\. Flowering
The plant begins to form new flower clusters. Successful pollination depends, among other factors, on temperature, humidity, and the overall health of the plant.
5\. Fruit Set
After pollination, the flower develops into a young fruit. During this period, regular watering and maintaining stable growing conditions are particularly important, as stress can cause flowers or young fruits to drop.
6\. Fruit Growth
The fruits rapidly increase in weight, and the plant directs most of the assimilates it produces to them. Nutrient deficiencies or water management issues are particularly evident at this time.
7\. Ripening
The fruits change color, soften, and develop their characteristic flavor and aroma. During this period, intense biochemical changes take place, including the synthesis of lycopene, beta-carotene, and volatile aromatic compounds.
8\. Plant Senescence
Toward the end of the season, the growth rate gradually slows, the oldest leaves die off, and the plant directs its remaining resources to the ripening fruit. In home gardening, this stage usually ends with the first autumn frosts or when the plants are removed after the harvest is complete.
The tomato’s life cycle can last from about 90 to over 180 days, depending on the variety, sowing date, weather conditions, and cultivation methods. Understanding the individual stages allows you to better tailor fertilization, watering, and care to the plant’s actual needs.
