Mother plant

Also known as: parent plant

A mother plant is a specimen selected for the production of seeds or breeding material. It should be healthy, typical of the variety, and possess all the desired characteristics. The quality of the mother plant directly affects the value of the resulting seed. It is advisable to mark the selected plant during the growing season and monitor it until harvest, rather than selecting seeds based on a single fruit.
