Kutykula
The cuticle is the outer, extracellular layer covering the epidermis of leaves and fruits. It consists mainly of cutin and waxes found on its surface and within a matrix associated with the cell wall. It limits water loss and hinders the penetration of pathogens. Its thickness, composition, structure, and elasticity depend on the variety and environmental conditions, and together they influence the fruit’s susceptibility to cracking.
