Italian Roma is ideal for bountiful harvests and homemade preserves. Its firm flesh contains few seeds. In a favorable growing season, a single plant can yield as many as 200 fruits.
Its determinate growth pattern allows for a more concentrated harvest period, which makes it easier to prepare a larger batch of sauce or puree. The plant is sturdy but not very tall. It can be grown without a tall stake; however, a low support helps keep the fruit-laden shoots off the ground.
In field cultivation, mulching and well-spaced planting are beneficial. This reduces the fruit’s contact with the ground and makes care and harvesting more convenient.
