Japanese Black Trifele is a tall tomato variety with potato-like leaves that produces an abundance of fruit. The pear-shaped fruits, weighing 100–150 g, have dark skin, a rich flavor, and are resistant to cracking.
Despite its name, the variety is associated with Russia. It also appears in collections as “Yaponskiy Trufel Chernyi.” In 1999, Åke Truedsson of Sweden made it available through the Seed Savers Exchange, helping to distribute the seeds outside of Europe.
In our cultivation, harvesting just before the fruit reaches full softness works well. Its dark color and distinctive flavor invite comparison with “Carbon,” which has flatter fruit.
