A tall-growing tomato variety resulting from a cross between the Antique Roman and Banana Legs tomatoes. This cross produced a very unique red tomato variety with irregular orange and yellow stripes—like tongues of fire. The fruits are elongated, about 5 cm wide and 12 cm long, very fleshy, with a high dry matter content, low acidity, and exceptional flavor; they are perfect for eating fresh, in salads, and for preserving. It bears fruit continuously until the first frost. It begins to produce fruit approximately 80 days after transplanting.
Speckled Roman was bred by John Swenson, a member of the Seed Savers Exchange, and was included in the exchange catalog in 1999. The yellow ‘Roman Candle’ variety stems from the same breeding program—an interesting contrast to the red, fiery fruits.
