Summertime Green This is a dwarf tomato variety with large, slightly flattened fruits that remain green on the inside even after ripening. The translucent skin highlights the flesh’s unusual color. The flavor combines sweetness with a refreshingly tart note; these tomatoes are best enjoyed fresh, sliced, and in colorful salads.
The variety was developed by the Dwarf Tomato Project from the offspring of a cross between “Golden Dwarf Champion” and “Green Giant,” created by Patrina Nuske Small. David Lockwood selected and named it, and it became commercially available in 2010. It is an example of modern efforts to preserve the flavor of large tomatoes in compact plants.
It has regular leaves and a dwarf growth habit. It requires staking despite its shorter stature. According to the project specifications, it matures approximately 75 days after planting the seedlings. When harvesting, it’s best to look for a slight softening of the fruit rather than waiting for it to turn red.
This variety requires a great deal of finesse when determining whether the fruit is ripe or not: delaying the harvest by just a few days causes the fruit to overripe. Ripe fruit looks practically identical to unripe fruit! That’s why it’s important to remove the leaves so you can keep a close eye on them at all times. This precision and intuition during harvest are rewarded by the unique—even spicy—flavor of the fruit itself. Unlike most green varieties, which are naturally very sweet, Summertime Green has a distinctly tart, tangy, and sharp flavor. A unique variety for connoisseurs, definitely worth trying!Variety characteristics
