The tiny fruits, weighing no more than 5 grams, are bright red and spherical. They are sweet, full of flavor, and perfect for snacking—almost like candy. The flavor more than makes up for the plant’s lower yield compared to “modern” varieties. The variety originates from Mexico. The fruits reach maturity about 60 days after planting. The plant grows tall and requires staking or tying up.

The name honors Matt Liebman, who received tomato seeds from Hidalgo, Mexico, preserved them in Maine, and passed them on to Rob Johnston of Johnny’s Selected Seeds. In an account for Practical Farmers of Iowa, he himself compared the taste of these tiny fruits to candy.
